• On a clear day, it’s a pleasantly warm beach with a solid restaurant and a great view of Concepción Volcano. It’s also known for its stunning sunsets.
• The beach is very affordable, as there’s no cover charge or entrance fee.
• Very minimal preparation is required, as you only need to figure out transportation.

✈️ About My Trip

For context on my review, here’s what to know about my trip:

• I finance my trips and don’t receive sponsorship; this review reflects my honest opinions.
• I visited Playa Mango in late 2024.
• My Nicaragua trip was in October when it was transitioning from the low, rainy season to the high, dry season.

• Visiting Playa Mango is an uncommon experience. I estimate that fewer than 50 freshwater beaches worldwide have such a unique background because Concepción Volcano is one of the few symmetrical volcanos in the world.
• I didn’t go during sunset, but I’ve been told it’s one of the best spots on Ometepe Island to catch it.

• The beach quickly becomes less memorable if the weather is foggy or rainy.

• Playa Mango is a decently enjoyable experience because the water is not cold. There are also available activities nearby, including a swing, a floating platform, kayaks, paddleboards, and lounging areas.

• The water is not clear and can feel a bit dirty, which takes away from the enjoyment.
• It’s also not a particularly rewarding experience (i.e., there are no challenges to overcome) because it’s primarily a place to enjoy and relax.

Visiting Playa Mango costs between $0 and $40. There’s no entrance fee or cover charge, so expenses are optional. Here’s how the costs break down:

• 🛶 Activities: $10-$30 total – There are optional activities at the beach (e.g., you can rent kayaks on-premise).

Just a short distance from Playa Mango, you can rent kayaks to see caimans.

• 🍔 Food: $10 per meal – Playa Mango has a relatively pricey but solid restaurant. I spent ~$10 on a tasty burger and a fruit smoothie here.

• No specific skills or fitness is required unless you want to swim or paddleboard further into the lake.
• Playa Mango is located an hour from Moyogalpa and about 15 minutes from Balgue. There’s plenty of parking, so you can get there by scooter (which is what I did), tuk-tuk, or bus.
• There’s no entrance fee or cover charge, so you don’t need to book in advance. Consider bringing a towel since the place does not have any available for rental.
